VA • Uptight Tonightː Ultimate 60's Garage Collection

Review by Steve Leggett
This 26-track assemblage of vintage '60s garage band singles may not actually be the ultimate garage rock collection (the Nuggets box set probably has that distinction locked up), but Uptight Tonight: Ultimate 60's Garage Collection rips out the attitude and trash riffs pretty darn well, making it perhaps the ultimate single-disc set of this raggedly endearing (and enduring) rock style. There are some well-known garage classics here, like Count Five's genre-defining "Psychotic Reaction," Music Machine's ultra-assertive "Talk Talk," and the Seeds leave-me-be anthem "Pushin' Too Hard," but there are also some less well-known sides like the Sonics' Kinks-on-steroids monster "He's Waitin'," the Wailers' "Hang Up" fuzzfest, and Dean Carter's unhinged and manic version of "Jailhouse Rock." Serious garage band record collectors will already have most of these tracks, but listeners looking for a single-disc compilation to check out what all the fuss is about, or folks looking for a good purchase to supplement the Nuggets box, Uptight Tonight will be darn near perfect. Either way, it hits the nerves like an ice pick full of adrenaline.

VA • You Heard It Here First!

All collectors like a bit of musical trivia, and “who did it first” is a game that’s often played when the most hardcore of them get together to swap matrix numbers and that sort of thing. Most buyers of Ace CDs will know that many of the biggest hits of the 1960s and 1970s were recycled from earlier 45s that had failed for those who did them originally. And the failure of some of those ‘earlier 45s’ is ‘celebrated’, if you like, by the release of “You Heard It Here First”.

Question Mark and the Mysterians • 96 Tears

Question Mark & the Mysterians o ?

Question Mark and the Mysterians are an American garage rock band from Bay City and Saginaw in Michigan, who were initially active between 1962 and 1969. Much of the band's music consisted of electric organ-driven instrumentals, and an enigmatic image inspired by the science fiction film The Mysterians.[2] In addition, the band's sound was also marked by raw-resonating lead vocals of "?" (Question Mark), making Question Mark and the Mysterians one of the earliest groups whose musical style is described as punk rock. Through their music, the group was recognized as a template for similar musical acts to follow.[3]
The band was signed to Pa-Go-Go Records in 1966, and released its first, and most acclaimed single, "96 Tears", in the early part of the year. "96 Tears" became a number one hit on the Billboard Hot 100, and propelled the group to a 15-month period of national prominence. Their debut album, 96 Tears followed. Though Question Mark and the Mysterians were unable to replicate their success with their later recordings, and are mistakenly deemed a "one-hit wonder", they did manage to reach the singles charts on five different occasions. In 1968, their label, Cameo-Parkway, was shut down for stock manipulation by the Securities Exchange Commission, taking the band's money and contract with them. After their disbandment in 1969, the band has regrouped and released additional material over the years.

Television • Marquee Moon

Biography by Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Television were one of the most creative bands to emerge from New York's punk scene of the mid-'70s, creating an influential new guitar vocabulary. While guitarists Tom Verlaine and Richard Lloyd liked to jam, they didn't follow the accepted rock structures for improvisation -- they removed the blues while retaining the raw energy of garage rock, adding complex, lyrical solo lines that recalled both jazz and rock. With its angular rhythms and fluid leads, Television's music always went in unconventional directions, laying the groundwork for many of the guitar-based post-punk pop groups of the late '70s and '80s.

In the early '70s, Television began as the Neon Boys, a group featuring guitarist/vocalist Tom Verlaine, drummer Billy Ficca, and bassist Richard Hell. At the end of 1973, the group reunited under the name Television, adding rhythm guitarist Richard Lloyd. The following year, the band made its live debut at New York's Townhouse theater and began to build up an underground following. Soon, their fan base was large enough that Verlaine was able to persuade CBGB's to begin featuring live bands on a regular basis; the club would become an important venue for punk and new wave bands. That year, Verlaine played guitar on Patti Smith's first single, "Hey Joe"/"Piss Factory," as well as wrote a book of poetry with the singer.

Television recorded a demo tape for Island Records with Brian Eno in 1975, yet the label decided not to sign the band. Hell left the band after the recording of the demo tape, forming the Heartbreakers with former New York Dolls guitarist Johnny Thunders; the following year, he began a solo career supported by the Voidoids, releasing a debut album, Blank Generation, in 1977. Hell was replaced by ex-Blondie bassist Fred Smith and Television recorded "Little Johnny Jewel," releasing it on their own Ork record label. "Little Johnny Jewel" became an underground hit, attracting the attention of major record labels. In 1976, the band released a British EP on Stiff Records, which expanded their reputation. They signed with Elektra Records and began recording their debut album.

Marquee Moon, the group's first album, was released in early 1977 to great critical acclaim, yet it failed to attract a wide audience in America; in the U.K., it reached number 28 on the charts, launching the Top 40 single "Prove It." Television supported Blondie on the group's 1977 tour, but the shows didn't increase the group's following significantly.

Television released their second album, Adventure, in the spring of 1978. While its American sales were better than those of Marquee Moon, the record didn't make the charts; in Britain, it became a Top Ten hit. Months later, the group suddenly broke up, largely due to tensions between the two guitarists. Smith rejoined Blondie, while Verlaine and Lloyd both pursued solo careers; Lloyd also played on John Doe's first solo album, as well as joined Matthew Sweet's supporting band with the 1991 album Girlfriend.

Nearly 14 years after their breakup, Television re-formed in late 1991, recording a new album for Capitol Records. The reunited band began its comeback with a performance at England's Glastonbury summer festival in 1992, releasing Television a couple months later. The album received good reviews, as did the tour that followed, yet the reunion was short-lived -- the group disbanded again in early 1993. In 2001, Television again reunited for a handful of shows in the U.K. as well as an appearance at the Noise Pop Festival in Chicago, and they continued to perform occasionally when the spirit moved them. In 2007, Richard Lloyd announced he was leaving Television under amicable circumstances; guitarist Jimmy Rip, who had played on Verlaine's solo albums and had sat in for Lloyd when illness prevented him from playing a concert with the group, became his permanent replacement for their occasional live appearances. Tom Verlaine died in New York City on January 28, 2023 after a brief illness. He was 73 years of age.

Formed in 2006, The Del Moroccos are an 8-piece Rock n’ Roll band with stellar guitar, bass, drums, piano, tenor/bari sax, and 3 sexy frontwomen - Gabrielle Sutton, Adrienne Stoner, and Sarah Goldstein. Hi-Style Records put out their debut full-length album, Blue Black Hair, in 2008. Knock the Ray-ettes, Bo Diddley and Link Wray together, with a blast of garage, a hit of late ’50s black rock n’ roll, and you get a red hot raucous mix of "Soulful 50s garage." The album features veteran Chicago musicians from the rockabilly, surf, ska, jazz and R & B scenes, from bands including: JD McPherson, The Mighty Blue Kings, The Four Charms, Deals Gone Bad, The Modern Sounds, Cave Catt Sammy, Andrew Bird, Kevin O’Donnell’s Quality 6.

Blue Black Hair ticks all the right rockin’ boxes and is definitely one for the shopping list! - Pete O’Gorman, Now Dig This, UK CD of 2008!!!!

“.....(the Del Moroccos) repped for Chicago well, blurring the lines between rockabilly and early-60s soul, without the narrow-minded myopia that sinks most newer ‘billy acts.” - James Porter, Time Out Chicago

Jerry Cole • Guitars A Go Go

Biography by Heather Phares
Throughout the '60s and '70s, guitarist/songwriter Jerry Cole worked with some of the most prominent talents in rock & roll, including Them, the Beach Boys, the Byrds, and as a session man in Phil Spector's Wrecking Crew. With his own group the Spacemen, Cole released four albums of space-age surf music in just over two years, beginning with 1963's Outer Limits. As the '60s progressed, Cole worked on sessions for the Byrds' "Mr. Tambourine Man"/"I Knew I'd Want You" single and Them's 1965 self-titled album. He teamed up with Roger McGuinn again in 1972 for McGuinn's debut solo record, and session work with Roger Miller, Chuck Howard, and Susie Allanson sent him in a country-rock direction. Cole's work with the Spacemen was collected in the 1999 Sundazed compilation Power Surf! The Best of Jerry Cole & His Spacemen.

The Sonics • Introducing the Sonics

 Review by Cub Koda
This is a limited-edition, 180-gram premium vinyl audiophile pressing of the group's final album for Jerry Dennon's Jerden label. In addition to the band's two original hits (recorded and originally issued on the Etiquette label), there are 13 sides that were cut at the band's last session in 1966. All of the material on here is the same as on Jerden's compact disc version of the same material (issued as Maintaining My Cool), save for the exclusion of a lame version of "Hanky Panky," mercifully replaced here with Gerry Roslie's original "Love Lights." This makes a more than interesting comparison for audiophiles when compared to Jerden's CD version of this, minus the track swap. This also features the original album cover art of the band captured in a blue duo-tone in their matching gaucho outfits. Hardcore fans of the band and completists will want both versions of this.

The Jet Black's • Remember Shadows & The Ventures

Artist Biography by Alvaro Neder
Formed in 1961, the Jet Black's was one of the first Brazilian instrumental rock groups. Like the other groups of the same period (the Jordans, the Fellows, and the Avalons, among others), the Jet Black's were influenced by the English group the Shadows, and by the American the Ventures. After backing up famous interpreters, they were allowed to record their own albums. The Jet Black's were Chantecler's first group in this line to have success, which made it possible for the recording company to compete with Copacabana, which had the Jordans. Their first single ("Apache"/"Kon-Tiki") scored a hit, and was followed by Hully-Gully (1962), Twist/The Jet Black's Again (1963), and Top Top Top, the latter heavily influenced by the Beatles. They also backed up singers like Galli Jr./ Prini Lorez (founder of the Rebels) on "What'd I Say" (Ray Charles), Ronnie Cord on "Rua Augusta" (1964), Deny & Dino and Roberto Carlos (1966), Sérgio Reis, Celly Campelo, and others, sharing with the Clevers the preference of the artists of São Paulo. In 1965, the group performed at the official opening of the Jovem Guarda TV show, with Roberto Carlos, Erasmo Carlos, Wanderléa, and others; it was the same year in which they recorded vocals for the first time, on The Jet Black's. In 1966, the Jet Black's had another hit with the double single Zorba, O Grego, which also had their biggest hit, the old youth anthem "Theme for Young Lovers" (recorded by the Shadows) and departed for tours in Paraguay and Japan. In 1967, the guitarist Gato left the group and the Jet Black's became exclusively a house band (for Continental), recording occasional albums with their hits until the '90s. Still active, the group re-recorded "Apache" for the box set 30 Anos da Jovem Guarda.

Messer Chups • Hyena Safari

Messer Chups is an experimental band from St. Petersburg, Russia. The band was founded by Oleg Gitarkin who had previously performed with Oleg Kostrow under the name of Messer für Frau Müller. Messer Chups is often considered a "spin-off" band of Messer für Frau Müller. The band was originally a duo of Gitarkin on bass guitar and Annette Schneider who played the synths. During 2000–2002 Messer Chups consisted of Gitarkin and Igor Vdovin on synth.

In 2003, the producer of Messer Chups and head of their home label Solnze Records, Oleg Tarasov, invited the world famous theremin player Lydia Kavina to join them. Together they have released several albums and reworked their previous releases. In 2005, Messer Chups became a duo consisting of Gitarkin and ZombieGirl on bass. In 2007, they became a trio, with drummer Denis "Kashey" Kuptzov from the famous band Leningrad. In 2008, they changed their drummer to Alexander Belkok, and Alexander Skvortzov became their vocalist.

Messer Chups' music often features a foundation of surf drums on which they build collages of samples from odd sources, like jazz, east European animation soundtracks, and American B-pictures. On top of that they play guitar solos and the theremin.

The group's album "The Incredible Crocotiger" was used as the soundtrack for the dating sim Monster Prom.
